RARE!! UN-USSUED CONDITION Springfield Armory, M1884 Trapdoor rifle, Cal: 45-70, MFG: 1890, S/N: 470802, Single shot breechloader, 32 5/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: The model 1884 introduced the Buffington rear sight to the Trapdoor which was more precise & had windage adjustment. This model also changed the breech-block model marking to 1884. Older rifles were updated to with the new sight when refurbished & some 1884 rifles were made from left over 1873 marked breech blocks.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is excellent with only a couple superficial nicks & scratches & minor finish wear in handling spots. The stock appears to never been sanded with the cartouches being legible & crisp. The left flat of the stock has the acceptance/inspector's cartouche ''SWP'' over ''1891'' inside a box. The bottom of the wrist is stamped ''O.B'' & the ''P'' in circle firing proof. The metal carries its original blue & rates 98% overall with spots of minor thinking & a couple small nicks & scratches. The breech block & wrist tang retains its original, deep case-hardened finish & rates 98% as well. The markings on the metal are all crisp & legible with thinning caused by poorly struck markings on rounded surfaces. The breech block is marked ''US'', over ''MODEL'', over ''1884''. The rear of the receiver has the S/N. left side of the chamber marked ''V'', over ''P'', over a eagle's head, over ''P'', & the top is marked ''A''. The lock plate is marked with a American great eagle next to ''US'', over ''SPRINGFIELD''. Both barrel bands are marked ''U''. upper extension of buttplate marked ''US''. The bore is excellent near MINT. It's bright & mirrorlike, sharp & deep rifling with no visible wear. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a Buffington ladder rear sight. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate. plate retains most of its blue with spots worn gray & toning brown. Rifle has both factory sling loops with the third stacking loop & the cleaning/clearing rod. a STUNNING example of a 1884 Trapdoor that appears to have been unissued retaining all its original finish, parts & appearing to never have a screw removed. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 4000
