RARE!! Remington, M1870/89 Reformado, 2nd model Rolling block rifle, Cal: 11.4x57mmR Reformado, MFG: 1871-73, S/N: NVSN, Single shot breech loading rifle, 35 1/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle comes out of the Famous Mike Carrick collection. It was sold to him as a captured rifle from Cuba during the Spanish American war. He spoke to famous Military historian & author George Layman about the rifle & he states it was a Spanish supplied rifle to colonial troops; this one being supplied to the Philippines islands & used during the Philippine insurrection by Philippine Milita. George believes the ''10002'' marking on the stock is the date it was captured Oct. 1902, & that the ''100109'' is the date the gun was released as surplus Oct.1st 1909. George also thinks the ''520 US'' marking on the barrel is a firearms registration mark placed on it in the Philippines when it was sold as surplus & went into circulation & states, he's seen the same markings on rifles in the Philippines when he was there in the 1970's. This mark could also be a Bannerman applied number, if this rifle ended up in the Philippines by being sold to them from Bannerman. This rifle comes some of Mike's research information & emails between Mike & George finding the origins of the rifle. The Reformado cartridge this is chambered in was the Original .43 Spanish cartridge that was tapered instead of bottle necked allowing the use of a slighter bigger & heavier now jacketed bullet & for more powder inside the case. Designed in the late 1880's by two Spanish Army officers, Lt. Col. Luis Freyre y Gongora and Capt. Jose Brull y Seoane, in a aim to update the ballistics of the aging Rolling blocks in their original .43 caliber. The rifles only had to have their chambers modified to accept the newer cartridge as the bullet size increase was not enough to need to the bore size & the deep grooves could accommodate it leading to a better gas seal & gave it even better ballistics. The older ammo could be fired inside a gun with the new chamber & the case fire formed them to the correct size & then were reloaded for use.
CONDITION: The two-piece, straight wrist wood stock is good with nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use. Wood has shrunk leaving the metal proud to the wood around the wrist tangs & buttplate, chips to the top rear edge of the right side of forend. stock has darkened from added oils over time. There are a few end grain pops by the buttplate. The left cheek of the stock is marked ''100109'' inside a double box, & ''10002'' below it, both markings thinned but the ladder is barley visible. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''1550'' or ''1530'', marking is worn & barely visible. The barrel has toned to a even chocolate brown patina while the receiver has mostly toned gray with speckles of brown patina. there is roughness/cleaned pitting scattered across the metal & prominently around the stock line on the barrel. Left side of the receiver is stamped ''102'' over ''13''. The upper tang is marked with the two line 'REMINGTON'' address & patents ending in ''1866''. The left side of the chamber has a ''squiggle'' mark proof that was found on all the rifles Spain sent to their colonies. The top of the chamber is stamped ''520 US''. Middle barrel band marked ''U'', other bands have no visible marks. The bore is good. its bright with thinned rifling that's almost smooth at the muzzle & roughness. The barrel holds a worn small barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder aperture rear sight marked 2 to 4 on the base & 5 to 10 on the ladder. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned to a mix of brown patina & gun metal gray with roughness. The rifle has both factory sling loops, the cleaning/clearing rod, & a Remington export socket bayonet marked ''15'' on the blade & with a older buffed number on the link between the socket & blade. Mechanical function appears solid. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 700 to 1500
