RARE!! Westley Richards & Co., T.P.D. marked, Type 2 Z.A.R. Martini-Henry Carbine, Cal: .577/.450, MFG: 1897, S/N: 4685, Single shot breech loader, 25'' barrel.
HISTORY: When the British took the South African Capital, Pretoria, in June of 1900, they would set up the Transvaal Police Department (TPD), they soon became better known as the South African Constabulary. They were armed with a variety of captured arms & arms supplied by the British. The British also supplied them with their older bobby uniforms. According to Val Winfer in ''British Single shot rifles Vol.4'', The ZAR (''South African Republic' or in Dutch ''Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek) only ordered 2000 Westly Richards carbines serial numbers between 3000 & 5000, but actual amount that reached them from British shipment blockades is unknown. This carbine unique as its more of a short rifle than a carbine & being TPD marked means it survived the 2nd Boer war, was captured & used on by the new police force after.
CONDITION: The two-piece, straight wrist walnut stock is good with wood split/crack repairs & wood fills one both sides of the forend & on the comb of the buttstock. Dings on the edges of the cleaning rod channel & chips to the top edged of the forend, along with other nicks dings & scratches from use. Some dark oil staining where the wood meets metal. & the buttplate is slightly proud to the wood all the way around. Both cheeks of the buttstock are stamped with a faded ''TPD'' over ''34''. The metal has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina with spots of light roughness. The left side of the receiver is marked with a triangle over ''WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO.'', the top left corner is marked with a thinned British proof. The right side of the receiver is marked ''MADE SPECIALLY FOR'' over ''ZAR'', ''S''. The bottom left edge of the receiver is marked with the S/N. the forward face of the receiver, covered by the forend, is stamped ''NO. 30,432''. Top of the chamber is marked ''1897'' inside a triangle. The left rear of the barrel has a line of commercial British proofs & the ''52'' bore measurement. The top of the barrel, in front of the rear sight is marked ''WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO.''. The upper extension of the buttplate is marked ''S'' under some roughness. Rear sight leaf marked ''48''. The bore is fair. It's beginning to darken with proud rifling that thinning at the muzzle & roughness/light pitting throughout. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with tangent/ladder V-notch rear sight marked 1 to 3 on the base, & 4 to 8 on the ladder. The stock carries a steel buttplate, buffed clean with pitting scars. The rear sling swivel is missing, but the front loop is still attached to the barrel band. Rifle has a cleaning/clearing rod. Rifle's barrel can not mount a socket bayonet, & has no lug for a blade bayonet. Mechanical function appears solid. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
