Lithgow Small Arms Factory Australia, No.1 Mk. III* SMLE, Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1942, S/N: D4649, Bolt action rifle, 25 1/4'' barrel.
HISTORY: The No.1 MK.III* is a simplification of the No.1 Mk.III that was done to speed up production for WW1. Adopted in 1915 it removed the volley sights & the magazine cut-off from the rifle. this is the longest produced pattern of the SMLE being made from 1915 clear till the 1960's in countries like Australia & India. Total production numbers of the No.1 MK.3* is unknown & mixed up with other No.3 models but is in the millions.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip, two-piece wood stock is good with various small nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. The stock has darkened from added oils. The metal is proud to the wood at the toe. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''MA'', over ''LITHGOW'', over ''SMLE'' over ''III*'', over ''1942'', as well as the S/N (markings are heavily thinned & partially visible from wear). The bottom of the wrist is marked with two heavily faded proofs. Bottom of the forend stamped ''E''. ''48'' in white paint is written on the bottom of the forend, & on the bolt body. The metal carries a arsenal refinish with thinned/faded markings & some light roughness visible under the finish. The metal has toned to a mix of green paint, thinned parkerized finish, gun metal gray, & brown patina. Right side of the wrist band marked ''MA'', over ''LITHGOW'', over ''III*'', over ''1942'' (marking is heavily faded & only partially visible). The receiver band is marked with proofs & the S/N. The top of the chamber is marked with a ''R'' in circle (denotes a replaced barrel). Left side of the chamber is marked ''MA'', over ''1942'' with many small, faded proofs. The right side of the chamber is marked with the S/N & even more small faded proofs. The safety lever is marked ''III''. Most other metal parts have small proofs. S/N matching bolt & nose cap. The bore is good to fair. Its beginning to darken with strong rifling that's thinning at the muzzle & roughness/light pitting throughout the bore. The barrel holds a square blade front sight with protective ears, as well as a ramped base U-notch rear sight marked 2 to 20. The stock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate, nothing inside trapdoor. Stock has both factory sling loops. Mechanical function appears solid. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 200 to 400
