ROF Fazakerley, No.4 Mk.2 SMLE, Cal: .303 British, MFG: March 1954, S/N: PF32656, Bolt action rifle, 25 '' barrel.
HISOTRY: This is the final pattern of the Lee-Enfield rifle adopted by Great Britian. it was designed to extend the service life of the No.4 before a self-loading rifle could be adopted & as a way to create jobs & work programs to improve England's diminished post-war economy. The most notable upgrade to the Mk.2 is the trigger was now pinned directly to the receiver like most other rifles, instead of the trigger guard. This prevented issues with the trigger caused by shrinkage of the wood They were produced from 1949-55 with older No.4 Mk.1 rifles being updated to the new pattern during this time as well. Exact production numbers are not known with lots of older rifles being converted but is believed to be around 250,000. In 1955 the L1A1 SLR was adopted & the SMLE's in service would be put into storage with many brand new No.4 Mk.2 rifles being put away without ever being issued where they would stay before being sold as surplus years later.
CONDITION: The original semi-pistol grip, two-piece beech stock is very good with various small nicks, dings, & scratches from use around the stock. The S/N is stamped into the bottom forward section of the forend. There is a small ''54'' stamped in the bottom of the wrist. The Suncorite paint finish over parkerization rates 85% overall with some spots of thinning showing gray & spots of just paint loss. Both side of the wrist band are marked with small faded proofs. The left side of the receiver is marked ''NO4MK2 (F)'', ''3/54'' & the S/N. The top of the receiver band is marked with one small thinned proof. The right end of the barrel is stamped with ''CAI'' import stamps. Many smaller metal parts have small proof stamps. S/N matching bolt & magazine. The bore is very good to good. It's bright with strong rifling & roughness throughout the bore with spots of light pitting. The barrel holds a square blade front sight with protective ears. The receiver holds the flip up ladder, aperture rear sight. The stock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate. plate has small nicks, & dings. Nothing inside trapdoor. Stock has both factory sling loops & comes with a period correct green canvas sling. Mechanical function appears solid. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 400 to 800
