Izhevsk, M91/30 PU Mosin-Nagant, Cal: 7.62x54mmR, MFG: 1943, S/N: VT6950 (BT6950 on barrel), Bolt action rifle, 29'' barrel.
HISTORY: The first official Sniper variant of the Mosin was the M91/30 PE, developed in 1931 it had a mount on the top of the receiver & the scope was a copy of the German Zeiss scope. the PEM was the next iteration, introduced in 1936 it now has the scope mount on the side & made improvements to the scope. combined, fewer than 10,000 PE & PEM scopes were produced from 1931-40. The PU scope was designed at Factory #3 NKVD in Kharkov & was entirely Russian in design. Russia originally designed it to mount on the new SVT-40 rifle, as it was going to replace the Mosin, however problems would arise in production numbers, quality, & holding zero, so the Mosin stayed in service & in 1942 the scope was modified to mount to the M91/30 rifle & the PU sniper was born. The PU sniper would be made from 1942 to 1944-45 depending on the arsenal & a small batch in 47 from Izhevsk & a total of 388,000 would be made.
CONDITION: The straight wrist arctic birch stock is very good near excellent with light nicks & dings to the stock & scratches to the finish. Stock was lightly sanded & re-finished with Russian shellac, indicating a post WW2 arsenal refurbishment. Most cartouches are thinned or faint from the re-finish. The right cheek of the stock has the acceptance roundel stamp that's faint & illegible, as well as a mix of legible & illegible cartouches. The right side of the wrist is marked ''C'' over ''13'' inside a tombstone cartouche (Kiev arsenal refurbishment mark). There are many more miscellaneous cartouches on the right cheek, belly, comb, front of magazine, the left & right flats of the stock by the recoil lug & finger grooves. The metal carries a arsenal re-blue with thinned/faded markings & some spots of light roughness under the finish. The receiver also still shows the expected rough machining marks from rushed manufacture during the mid-war period, even after the arsenal re-finish. The metal finish rates 97% overall with light scratches on the receiver & barrel. There is some spots of over applied stock Shellac on the metal. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, was applied after re-finish with bear metal inside stamp. The barrel shank is marked with a hammer & sickle in a wheat wreath over ''1943r'', over ''VT'' over ''BT6950'', over a arrow inside a triangle, faint ''C'' inside circle on the right side (sniper eligible barrel marking for Izhevsk), as well as many other miscellaneous proofs. The ''VT'' is stamp is right above the ''BT'' & was stamped after being re-finished with bare metal inside the stamp. the right end of the barrel is stamped with CAI import markings. S/N matching bolt, magazine floorplate, & buttplate. Bolt appears to be forced matched with buffing marks under the stamping; floorplate is forced matched with older number lined out (most likely forced matched when it was refurbished). The bore is excellent. Bright & shiny with strong rifling, has not been counter bored. The barrel holds a post front sight with protective globe, U-notch leaf rear sight marked 1 to 20. The receiver has the Kochetov mount, PU scope rings, & PU scope mounted. Scope mount is electro penciled ''BT 6950''. PU scope is a factory 357 NKV (Leningrad/Omsk) MFG & is number A-110072. They were the primary manufacturer of PU scopes from 1940-45 with just under 300,000 made. They started in Leningrad in Autumn but in July-august of 41, the factory was evacuated to Omsk. This scope appears to be a mid-late 1943 MFG. The scope also bear's refurbishment marks from Arsenal #2 in Kiev, a ''X'' inside a box, with a ''P'' stamped next to it. Scope has old wax paper on the dials & covering the lens's. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate. Has shouldering/storage wear showing gray on the top ''hump'' of the plate. The stock has both sling wells & the cleaning rod. rifle comes with a original leather lens cover that's wrapped in old wax paper. Mechanical function appears solid. A nice example of a untouched post WW2, Kiev refurbished PU Mosin. Based on the rifle & scope being made at around the same time, & being marked with the same arsenal's refurbishment markings, it's likely the same scope that was put on the rifle at the factory in 1943, very uncommon sight. FFL or C&R Re - Value: 1000 to 2000
