AS SEEN ON FORGOTTEN WEAPONS ''Contracts & Bankruptcy: The Hopkins & Allen Model 1889 for Belgium''. This rifle also come from the Famous Mike Carrick collection & comes with some of his research information on the rifle. I cannot do a better job than Ian McCollum himself so please watch his video ON THIS EXACT RIFLE for more in depth history of the Belgium 1889, but a summary of it is, In WW1 when the Germany army invaded, the Belgium army was forced to withdraw to France leaving FN & many of their rifles behind to be captured by the Germans & were re-configured by them for their use. The Belgium state arsenal's personnel & equipment were evacuated before Germany took over but FN being a private firm was not. A small repair & refurbishment shop would be set up In Calais France with some the evacuated equipment, but full scale production would not start back up till February of 1916 when production was set up in Birmingham England with the evacuated equipment & personnel. Belgium was in need of rifles NOW & did not have time to set up the workshops. They went to the US to look for a company to make guns lucked out with the Hopkins & Allen company. They had a contract to make rifles for the British, but it was larger than they were ready to take on & the British cancelled the contract in July of 1915, around the same time the Belgium's showed up to the US looking for rifle manufactures. In a hurry to pay for the cost of tooling up a factory for the British contact, Hopkins & Allen would sign a contact for 140,000 Rifle & 10,000 Carbines in august of 1915, but at a cost that proved too little & Hopkins & Allen would go into receivership in June of 1917 with only 12,000 being made after expanding their factory for the contact. They would be bought in October of 1917 by the Marlin-Rockwell company & would start production back up but with a renegotiated rate of the rifles (nearly double) allowing them to actually finish it. The full contact would be finished & shipped in October of 1918. In the 1920's Belgium would update the rifles with new features & in 1936 a universal short rifle was adopted with all the older rifles in storage being converted to the short rifle pattern. When this was done all the old markings & identifying features were scrubbed off. Belgium was very thorough with these conversions & original rifles are extremely RARE!!.

Left side of the stock has a thinned S/N stamp. The bottom of the wrist is marked with a small ''K'', a small ''W'' in front of the magazine, & a small ''8'' just before the rear barrel band. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N & the Belgium acceptance/property mark ''EGB'' over star inside a oval (Epreuve Gouvernement Belge). The receiver band is marked ''HOPKINS AND ALLEN ARMS CO.'', over ''NORWICH.CONN U.S.A.''. all S/N marked parts on the rifle are S/N MATCHING.
