Ludwing Loewe & Co., M1896 Boer Mauser Carbine (M1893 action), Cal: 7x57mm Mauser, MFG: 1896, S/N: 32, Bolt action rifle, 18'' barrel.
HISTORY: Before the 2nd anglo-Boer war the ZAR ''Zuid Afikaansche Republiek'' (South African Republic) & the OVS ''Oranje Vrij Staat'' (Orange free state), were buying Mauser rifles from Ludwig Loewe & co (later DWM) in order to arm the Boer forces. Rather uniquely, the governments sold the rifles to the soldier instead of issuing them. This led the Boers becoming extremely effetive with their rifles since they used that exact rifle in their day-to-day normal lives before the war, either hunting or competition. This also led to soldiers customizing their rifles stock with names, places they've been, or just decorative designs. The Majority of the rifles bought by these governments would be marked as such either on the stock or the receiver, however many unmarked examples made their way into Boers hands & were used with them starting to stockpile rifles just before the war with growing tensions. This example does not bear any ''OVS'' or ''ZAR'' markings, but does have what appears to be initials ''L.D.'' etched into the stock in the Boer fashion, & with being a very early S/N being marked MOD 1896 its most likely a early shipment carbine that did not get marked.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with some nicks, dings, & scratches from use that have been smoothed over from handling over time. The buttplate is slightly proud to the wood at the toe & in a couple spots around the plate. there is some oil staining by the buttplate from being oiled & stored muzzle up for a long time. There is a 1'' tight crack 0n the bottom of the wrist, emanating from the trigger guard. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''L.D.''. The metal has mostly toned to a brown patina with a spots of gray, & spots of thinned blue remaining protected areas. light roughness visible on some metal parts. the left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N over a German crown proof, ''MOD, MAUSER 1896.'', over ''LUDW. LOEWE & CO BERLIN.''. S/N matching bolt (faint & under some roughness), magazine floorplate, magazine/trigger guard assembly (this & previous marking are thinned), rear sight ladder & elevator. S/N mismatched cleaning rod. The bore is very good. It's bright with strong rifling, light roughness through the bore & slightly more concentrated roughness in the grooves. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up V-notch ladder rear sight marked 4 to 14. The stock carries a steel buttplate. starting to tone brown with some spots of roughness. The rifle has both factory left side sling loops with a saddle ring on the rear loop. Rifle has a cleaning rod & comes with a slip on front sight protector. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
