Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM), M1896 Boer Mauser (M1893 action), Boer Engraved, Cal: 7x57mm Mauser, MFG: 1897-98, S/N: 2234, Bolt action rifle, 29'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle was owned & used by Boer Burgher Jacobus Johannes Grobler. He was born on the 1st of march, 1884 at Bosmanskraal, Transvaal, South Africa. He joined the Middelburg Commando on Jan 5th 1900 at age 15. His commanding officer was captain Trichardt. J.J Grobler was the nephew of General Grobler & Commandt H.S. Grobler of Middleburg. He saw action with the Middleburg Commando in Natal & the Transvaal. The Australian forces were documented as fighting against the Middleburg Commando's. J.J. Grobler was taken prisoner in 1902 & sent to Ladysmith POW camp. He would apply for & receive the Anglo-Boer war medal (Medalje voor de Anglo-Boere Oorlog) in 1923. He would die at 60 years old on July 12, 1944. This rifle comes from the Famous Mike Carrick Collection & comes with some of his research information on the rifle & J.J. Grobler. This rifle was also featured in Dave C George's book ''Carvings from the Veldt'' on page 58 Fig 52.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with some nicks, dings, & scratches from use that have been smoothed over from handling over time. The right cheek of the stock is carved ''J.J. GROBLER'', over ''P.ZOON.GROEN'', ''FONTYN.M.D.BURG''. right next to the carvings is a slightly thinned German cartouche. The metal has toned to mix of a brown patina & thinned blue with roughness across the metal & spots of cleaned pitting on the barrel. the left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N next to a German proof, ''DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN.'', over ''BERLIN''. S/N mismatched bolt (4208), & cleaning rod. S/N matching magazine floorplate, magazine/trigger guard assembly, rear sight ladder & elevator. The bore is poor. Its dark with roughness & pitting throughout, still has visible rifling through the bore. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up V-notch ladder rear sight marked 4 to 20. The stock carries a steel buttplate. Plate has toned brown with roughness. The rifle has both factory bottom sling loops & comes with a cleaning rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2500
