Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM), M1896 Boer Mauser (M1893 action) O.V.S. & IMRV marked, Cal: 7x57mm Mauser, MFG: 1898, S/N: 4879, Bolt action rifle, 29'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle was part of the O.V.S. contract of may 13th 1898. It was captured by the British as some point & the ''O.V.S.'' marking was ground off by them (common for opposing forced to grind ownership marks off captured rifles) & then was issued to the Imperial Mounted Rifle Volunteers (rifle #248 of 300). They were a force that acted as early mobilized infantry, with the large landscapes of south Africa, fast moving infantry was need to close the distance & engage with the enemy. The Boers & British already were using this to great affect, but soon after the 2nd Boer war started the British would start raising many more of these units. Because of the rapid expansion some of the units were armed with captured armes from the Boers because of shortages, & being the second best option with captured ammo, & already been proved formidable in the Boers hands. See John Walter's book ''The German Rifle'' for more information about the ''IMRV'' marking.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with nicks, dings, vice marks, & scratches from use that have been smoothed over from handling over time. Light hand oil staining on the forend, with some oil darkening around the buttplate from being stored muzzle up for a time. The right cheek of the stock is stamped ''IMRV'' over ''248''. The bottom of the wrist has a slightly thinned but still strong German cartouche. The metal has toned to mix of thinned blue & brown patina with spots of strong blue present in protected areas on the receiver & along the stock line of both the receiver & barrel (the ground OVS mark is bare steel). Light speckled rust & brown patina visible across all the metal. The left side of the receiver is marked a German proof next to the ''OVS'' over the S/N mark (OVS mark is still faintly visible under the grinding), ''DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN.'', over ''BERLIN''. S/N mismatched bolt (866), rear sight elevator (66), & cleaning rod (B 60). S/N matching magazine floorplate, magazine/trigger guard assembly, & rear sight ladder. The bore is good. It's bright with proud rifling that's starting to thin at the muzzle, light roughness throughout the bore with more concentrated roughness near the muzzle. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up V-notch ladder rear sight marked 4 to 20. The stock carries a steel buttplate. Plate has toned brown with roughness with some shouldering wear showing gray. The rifle has both factory bottom sling loops & comes with a cleaning rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
