Waffenfabrik Steyr - Austria (CAI ST Import), Model 1912-61 Chilean Mauser short rifle, Cal: 7.62x51mm Nato, MFG: 1912, S/N: B2426, Bolt action rifle, 23 1/4'' barrel.
HISTORY: In 1912, Chile would 37,500 long & 5,600 carbine, M98 Mauser rifles from OEWG Steyr to replace their 1895 Pattern Mausers still in 7mm to keep up with their neighbors who were also adopting M98 Mauser, they would be designated by the year they were ordered, 1912. These rifles from this batch would be used clear through WW2 with a new batch of rifles purchased in 1935 for their Carabineros. During WW2 there would be internal struggles with the Chilean government with either turning communist or become a dictator ship but it ultimately ended with a presidential election & aligning with the US to stop the spread of communism. Because of this the Chileans had been cut off from their European suppliers of arms and had moved towards the use of US service arms. They would interestingly buy 1000 M1941 Johnson rifles in 7mm Mauser, but soon started getting large amounts of US surplus guns, equipment & ammo. They would switch from .30-06 to 7.62mm Nato at the same time as the us as well. In the 50's, Chile adopted the FAL in 7.62mm Nato & in the 60's would start converting their older 7mm Mauser bolt rifles to 7.62 Nato for rear line/support troops, reserves, & put into storage incase of a conflict. These were done at a couple different military arsenals and the conversion method & markings differ. these would be designated 1912-61, marked as such on the gun as well as being marked ''NATO'', ''7.62'', or ''7.62NATO'' on the receiver either on the front band or rear bridge. There are some reports of surplus 2-groove 03-A3 Springfield barrels being used for the conversions, but there is no official documentation of them receiving them. more likely what happened is Chile received or bought the old tooling for the 03-A3 Springfield barrels to re-bore the barrels after they bored them to 7.62mm, however there is no documentation of this as well. The conversions used a chamber sleeve to re-chamber the barrel & some of the sleeve jobs were poor & there is some reports of the chamber sleeve come out with a spent case. Because of that, rifle should be inspected by a gunsmith before firing.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip European walnut stock is very good as being lightly sanded & re-finished. Stock has various nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from service life & use. Metal slightly proud to the wood at the toe. Left cheek of the stock has a partially faded Chilean acceptance cartouche the right cheek has a unmarked unit disk inlayed. There is a partially visible, mismatched S/N (B177?) on the left flat of the stock, just above the recoil lug. The metal has worn gun metal gray with light speckled rust & dark patina with some spots starting to tone brown. spots of roughness present on most metal parts. The left side of the receiver is marked ''WAFFENFABRIK STEYR'' over ''AUSTRIA''. The receiver band is marked with the S/N, two proofs, the Chilean coat of arms over ''MODELO 1912-61'' over ''NATO'' (the ''61'' & ''NATO'' were electro penciled on when it was converted). All parts S/N mismatched (bolt handle is not marked or has been scrubbed). The bore is good. Its bright, with roughness/light pitting throughout the bore. Two groove 03-A3 style rifling. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a tangent V-notch rear sight marked 3 to 20. The stock carries a steel buttplate, mostly worn gray with some spots of brown patina & black paint in the middle. The rifle has the factory bottom sling loops & has the half-length cleaning rod. Mechanical function appears solid other than the safety. The camming notch that puts the striker on the safety has worn & no longer can grab behind the striker & wont engage without manually pulling the striker back (common on worn Mausers since its a friction wear part) being sold AS IS with NO RETURNES ACCEPTED. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 300 to 600
