Koishikawa (Tokyo) Arsenal, Type 38 school/reserve marked, Cal: 6.5x50mmSR, MFG: 1906-10, S/N: 29948 (pre series), Bolt action rifle, 31 1/2'' barrel
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip Japanese Walnut (Buna) stock is very good with numerus nicks, dings, gouges, & scratches from use that have been smoothed over from handling wear. Stock has darkened from added oils, & has slightly shrunk over time & the buttplate is proud to thew wood at the toe. Two-piece Japanese buttstock. Two faint cartouches on the bottom of the stock, one on the wrist & one in the belly. The metal has a old arsenal re-blue with markings thinned from being buffed & some spots of roughness under the blue, likely done when it was taken out of front line military service. The metal finish rates 60% overall with spots of wear worn gray & starting to tone brown, scratches/buff marks, one concentrated spot of rust at the rear of the receiver in the bolt handle channel, as well as light speckled rust. The receiver band is marked with a INTACT chrysanthemum that's over stamped with the Koishikawa arsenal logo, over ''TYPE 38'' in Japanese. The arsenal stamp is faint & only partially visible (This is a cancellation mark for well used guns withdrawn from first-line service & assigned to reserve units or schools). The top rear of the receiver is marked with a triangle in circle proof & a circle proof. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, the Tokyo arsenal logo, & Japanese inspectors marks. The left side of the chamber is marked with a triangle in a circle proof, the top is stamped ''19'' (likely a rack number for a school or a reserves arsenal). S/N mismatched bolt (1486) from around the same period since its marked with four digits instead of three, & S/N mismatched front barrel band. The bore is good. It's bright & shiny with thinned rifling throughout, & light continuous roughness throughout. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight & a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 4 to 24. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate that's worn gray with speckled brown patina. The rifle has the factory sling loops & has a cleaning rod. Mechanical function appears solid. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 300 to 600
