Kokura Arsenal, Type 99 Last Ditch, Cal: 7.7x58mm, MFG: 1945, S/N: 22154 (25th Series), bolt action rifle, 25 '' barrel.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip Japanese Beech (Buna) stock is very good with various nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use. Two-piece Japanese stock. The stock has rough shaping marks with rough rasp marks on the wrist, this is how it left the factory with rushed end of war production. The right cheek is marked ''12/51'' in black ink. The metal finish has mostly toned to a dull brown/gray patina with some remains of thinned blue at the rear of the receiver, & around the stock line of the receiver. Light speckled rust on the barrel & receiver band. The receiver band is marked with a ground off chrysanthemum (done after the war to surrendered rifles as a face-saving gesture), over ''TYPE 99'' in Japanese. The left side of the receiver is marked with the series mark, the S/N, the Kokura Arsenal logo, & Japanese inspectors marks. S/N mismatched bolt. There is grind marks on the extractor & around the locking lugs of the bolt, this could have been factory considering its a last-ditch bolt & the rough & rushed construction of the rifles & their parts, or it could have been done after to match the bolt to the rifle since it is mismatched. Either way the rifle should be inspected by a gunsmith before firing. The bore is very good. its bright & shiny with lightly thinned rifling & light roughness. Chrome lined bore. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight, with a fixed aperture rear. The stock carries a wooden three nail buttplate. rifle has the factory sling loops. At this stage the cleaning rod was eliminated from the rifle & there was not even a channel drilled in the stock for it. Mechanical function appears solid but bolt cycling is rough & binds when closed. This is a classic example of late war Type 99 that features a rough-welded bolt knob safety, fixed rear aperture sight with no guards on the front sight, riveted sheet metal front barrel band, roughhewn stock with no fullers, short handguard, & a wooden buttplate. these features are in stark contrast to the beautiful early war production 99's & shows how desperate & constrained the Japanese were at the end of the war. With the problems on the bolt of this rifle it should be inspected by a gunsmith before firing & is being sold AS IS with NO RETURNES ACCEPTED. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 100 to 400
