RARE Walther, PP (British L66A1), CAL: 22 LR, MFG: Before 1974, SN: 42577LR, DA/SA Semi Auto Pistol, 3 7/8'' Barrel.
HISTORY: In 1974, the British Royal Army Ordnance Corps purchased approximately 3,000 .22 LR Walther PP pistols to issue as Personal Defense Weapons (PDWs) to service members of the Ulster Defense Regiment. Approximately 1,500 of which would make their way to the US. These were to be issued to servicemembers who faced personal threats to their lives. It is very uncommon for militaries to issue firearms for off duty personal protection & even more uncommon for .22 LR firearms to be purchased or issued by militaries for use as PDWs. In about 1980 many of them were refinished with a black lacquer coating called Suncorite (This coating is no longer used due to being a hazardous material) and refitted with strengthened firing pins. The slide is typically marked if the firing pin was replaced, this particular example is not marked & likely did not receive a reinforced firing pin. In 1989 they were officially replaced as PDWs by the Walther P5 and SIG P230, and sold as surplus by the military. The sale of modern or semi-modern British military firearms as surplus is quite rare. They show up today in both European and American collector circles, often not recognized as actual British military-issue pistols due to the generally correct assumption that a 22 LR German pistol with what appears to be a black paint finish would likely not be a semi modern British military pistol that has made its way to the commercial market. This gun is unique for a number of reasons & would be a neat addition to any military collection.
CONDITION: The factory checkered plastic grips are excellent with minimal wear. The black Suncorite finish on the gun is very good with substantial handling wear and holster wear. Bore is excellent, bright with strong rifling. Mechanically solid, seems to function well. The slide holds a fixed integral front sight with a white dot & a fixed rear sight with a white line for an ''i'' sight picture. Comes with a modern 10 round magazine. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
