Winchester Double W Cartridge Board
HISTORY: The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was founded by Oliver Winchester, who acquired the rights to the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. from Smith & Wesson, producing some of the earliest & certainly most famous repeating cartridge rifles. The company would go on to dominate firearm manufacturing, innovation and were also competitive in the ammunition industry. Winchester was quite skilled at marketing both their firearms & ammunition. Part of their marketing efforts were these impressive display boards, such as this one. Over the years they displayed the evolution of metallic cartridges from rimfire to centerfire and black powder to smokeless powder. The company produced six different patterns of commercial bullet boards from 1874 to 1897. ''Please hang in a prominent place''. That's the request on the back of a Winchester cartridge display board.
CONDITION: This example is an 1897 pattern ''Double-W'' Cartridge Display Board. This example is heavily worn and aged. The board appears to be trimmed around the edges, with areas of the colored front cover page peeling, revealing the original cardboard backing. The text & images are heavily faded. There are multiple cartridges that are missing completely, some that are just missing the bullets, and all but one percussion tin is missing. The remaining percussion tin is full of caps. There are still numerous original cartridges that are secured with the original wire, with the original paper backing over the wire. The remaining complete original cartridges are in good condition, most having light spotting or speckling. This is an excellent candidate for a full restoration project.
