Antique Civil War Thermoplastic Photo Case. These cases were popular particularly before & during the Civil War. They held early forms of photography like daguerreotypes, ambrotypes & tintypes. The cases were made of a mix of shellac & wood fiber. They were also known as Union Cases (named for the ''union'' of the two materials). The material was developed circa 1850 & could be heated & pressed into moulds. Small chip next to latch, otherwise in great condition. 3'' x 2 1/2'' . These are fairly scarce & desirable by Civil War era collectors. Grade: Good ++ - Value: 100 to 300
