RARE, Remington-Hepburn No. 3 Sporting Rifle. CAL: 32-40, MFG: Antique, SN: 7322, Falling Block Single Shot Rifle, 30'' Octagon barrel. The second rifle in the collection from Captain Selden Allen Day, this Remington-Hepburn No.3 Sporting Rifle is fairly rare as only 10,000 No.3 rifles were produced in all variations. The original & checkered round knob pistol grip walnut stocks are excellent, with excellent original finish. The checkering remains fairly crisp & the stock shows clear straight grain. There is a tight 5'' grain crack emanating from buttplate end & running into the middle of the stock on the right side. There are very few minor contusions to the stocks. The forearm is smooth & has the ebony forend tip. There are very few minor contusions & scrapes. Overall appearance of the stocks is excellent. The barrel carries the makers address ''REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION N.Y''. Caliber stamping of ''32-40'' on bottom barrel flat forward of the forearm. The metal finish on the barrel rates 85%, with loss due to splotches of cleaned corrosion, most of which is located just in front of the receiver. The case-hardened receiver & drop lever display very nice & strong original case-colors, with some areas of cleaned speckling or pitting. Bore is excellent & bright, with crisp rifling. The barrel carries an open rear dovetail & an unusual from sight base. The upper tang is factory tapped, with two open threaded hole provisions for potential mounting of a tang sight. The buttstock carries a case-hardened crescent metal buttplate, which retains fantastic case-colors. Being that S.A. Day was a competitive shooter, its not surprising that the sights are removed from this rifle as he experimented on the right configuration for competition needs. Although not considered a long range target rifle, these rifle were used at the shorter range Creedmoor competitions & Day could have been competed using this rifle. An excellent original condition Remington-Hepburn rifle, just needing the correct sights to complete. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 3000 to 6000
