EXTREMELY RARE, Remington, No. 1 LONG RANGE ''CREEDMOOR'' TARGET RIFLE. CAL: 44-100 (Straight), MFG: 1873-78, SN: 6468, Rolling Block Single Shot Rifle, 32'' Octagon to round barrel. This rare rifle is the third rifle being offered from the collection from Captain Selden Allen Day. Made during what many would call the golden era of the Creedmoor competitions, Remington produced just 500 of these special target rifles. It is the rarest of the Remington rolling block target or sporting rifle variations. They were produced in 44-77, 44-90 or 44-100 calibers, this rifle being the most desirable in 44-100 & marked on the underside of the barrel in front of the forend ''44S100''. The rifle were produced with 1/3 octagon barrels. This rifle's barrel appears to have been shortened 2'' at the breech end, as the forend extends 2'' beyond the octagon portion. Additionally, there is a second dovetail cut for the forend lug, underneath the forend, 2'' ahead of the original dovetail. The rifles carried checkered pistol grip walnut stocks, with this stock having an upgraded scalloped bottom profile, with ebony inlay, (most of the inlay has broken away on this example). The checkering remains crisp & the stock displays very nice scalloped grain, particularly on the left side. There are very few minor contusions to the stock's original finish. There is some staining of the wood & finish thinning near the buttplate. The forearm is smooth & has the correct silver forend tip. Overall appearance of the stocks are excellent. The barrel carries the makers address stamped ''E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION N.Y.'' The original bright metal blue finish on the barrel rates 80%, with loss due to large splotchy areas of cleaned corrosion, most of which is located on the right side of the barrel. The case-hardened receiver displays fantastic original case-colors, with areas of cleaned rust speckling or pitting on the tangs & trigger guard. The hammer & block carry fantastic original blue. Bore is excellent & bright, with crisp rifling. The original long range tang & globe front sights have been removed, leaving open provisions in the upper tang. Instead, the barrel carries an unmarked military style sliding ladder rear sight & a small blade box front sight. The stock also has two holes in the top of the comb just ahead of the buttplate where a Creedmoor Vernier tang sight was previously mounted. The buttstock carries a widow's peak metal buttplate. As a Creedmoor competitive shooter, it makes sense that S.A. Day would of owned one of these specially built Creedmoor target rifles. Its also not surprising that the original sights are removed from this rifle as he likely would have tried various configurations & used them on other rifles he may have competed with. This is an extremely rare rifle which likely was used by Captain Selden Allen Day during his years as a competitor at The Creedmoor. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 2000 to 8000
