FANTASTIC Henry Repeating Rifle, First Variation, .44 Henry Cal., MFG: 1864, SN: 6550 Lever Action Rifle, Designed by Benjamin Tyler Henry & produced by the New Haven Arms Company. Henry's were used in the Indian Wars & by the Union during the Civil War. They were favored for their greater fire power than standard issue carbines, though at $30 to $40, they were a very expensive option in their day. This mid SN rifle still retains first variation rifle characteristics such as the pronounced ''Henry Drop'' profile on the rear of the receiver & the three flats on the receiver ring (receiver bridge) immediately behind the receiver & barrel joint. On this example, the original wood stock is very good to excellent & solid. The stock has been cleaned & lightly sanded & reoiled, displaying numerous small & minor dings, scratches & contusions consistent with period use. There are a couple of short & tight hairline cracks near the toe. The wood fit is very good with some shrinkage. The metal finish on the 24'' barrel has worn & toned to a thin brown patina, with a mix of added finish & with edge wear & areas of thinning worn to a gun metal gray. There are some small nicks, contusions or abrasions, & surface freckling, but no real pitting or rust. The barrel has a professionally filled 2nd rear dovetail approximately 6'' from the receiver ring. The brass frame & buttplate have both likely been cleaned in the past, but have developed nice aged color. Buttplate has a hinged trapdoor were an original 4pc hickory cleaning rod would be originally stored, although not currently present. Bore is fair, with areas of pitting amongst strong rifling. The rifle has a nickel silver front sight blade & third style folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard notch at the top of the leaf. Present are the typical sling attachments on the left side of the stock & barrel, & the faint remains of the ''Henry Bump'' can be seen below the sling provision on the stock. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the slightly larger style legend: ''HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860 / MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT.'' in two lines forward of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight & the receiver. Matching SN's are stamped on the inside of the buttplate & on the left side of the lower tang beneath the wood. The hammer, lever & trigger are case-hardened, although the case-color has mostly worn away & developed a brown patina. There is the remains of a ''W'' proof stamping on the lower tang, which has been speculated was the inspection stamping of Oliver Winchester. The hammer has borderless knurling on the spur. All screws fit & line up correctly, are mostly unbuggered & appear original. While it is reported that as many as 14,000 Henry rifles were produced. Production of the Winchester 1866 rifle was SN intermixed starting around 12,000, so some speculate fewer that 14,000 were actually produced. With such a low production total & their heavy use during the Civil War, Indian wars & Western frontier movement, any Henry rifles is always highly collectable, but especially when found with all SN matching parts & in relatively unmolested condition such as this rifle presents.
