Description

RARE Winchester, Model 1873 Musket, Third Variation, CAL: 44, MFG: 1894, SN: 480748, Lever Action Rifle, 30'' barrel, 27'' magazine tub. In all, over 720,000 Model 1873's were produced up until 1923 in three standard variations: a 24'' barrel rifle, a 20'' barrel carbine, & a 30'' ''musket'', which was aimed at military contracts. Production of Winchester Model 1873 Muskets only represented about 5% of all Model 1873 production (about 36,000 guns). Since the majority of the muskets were sold internationally, they are even harder to locate in the United States, as most never made it back to this country. The greatest popularity for the Model 1873 Musket was found in South American countries, where the guns were acquired by government & rebel forces alike during the later part of the 19th & early 20th centuries. Because most muskets left the country for these contracts, the Model 1873 Musket can be ''quite rare'' according to author George Madis. The original straight grip wood stock & & musket length forearm are excellent, with the original finish which has aged to a dark rich tone. There are several minor contusions, scrapes & scratches. There is a 1 1/4'' ''R'' carved into the right side of the stock. The metal finish has fully toned to a chocolate brown patina, with areas thinning to a gun metal gray. The loading gate retains the large majority of its original brilliant fire blued finish. Bore is excellent. The bottom of the brass cartridge lifter is stamped .44 CAL. in italics, & the top of the barrel, just in front of the receive is stamped 44 CAL. The upper tang is marked with the standard mid-production MODEL 1873 mark. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address & patent information ''WINCHESTERS-REPEATING-ARMS NEW HAVEN CT., KINGS-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29, 1866. OCTOBER 16, 1860.'' The barrel holds the original musket patter rear sight & the front sight/bayonet lug. The lug carries an original 18 1/2'' three sided bayonet. Both original sling swivels are in place as well. The original 3rd model dust cover & integral rails are in place on the top of the receiver & the dust cover operates smoothly. Buttstock carries a sliding trapdoor, smooth metal buttplate. This is an excellent original example of a fairly rare 1873 Musket rifle, complete with the bayonet. A wonderful collectible. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 6000
