Description

VERY RARE Winchester, Model 1886 ''Long Musket Forearm Style'' Saddle Ring Carbine, CAL: .45-70, MFG: 1889, SN: 28675, Lever Action Carbine, 22'' Round barrel, This early production carbine has the distinctive full length musket style forearm. 1886 SRC rifles with SN's below 30,000 were produced with these full length forends. These carbines were a rare variation. There were 159,996 Model 1886 rifles produced. Of the total production, only 36,524 were in 45-70 & only 6,651 carbines were produced in all calibers & barrel lengths. Of the 6,651 carbines, only 1,911 were in 45-70. Also, 352 of the 6,651 carbines were produced with ''Long Wood'', & of those only 137 were in .45-70 caliber. That makes this carbine one of only 137 examples produced in this configuration. The straight grain walnut stock & full-length forearm are excellent & solid. The stocks appear to have been cleaned, likely lightly sanded, & re-oil finished or stained. The wood remains proud to the metal in most areas, with few minor handling marks or tiny contusions. There is a thin sliver missing along the edge of the upper tang on the left side & up against the receiver. The barrel retains 90% coverage of blue finish toning a bit plum brown. The case-hardened receiver displays the faded smokey outline of faded case-colors. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped ''- MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U S. A-'' in two lines with arrows on either end of the marking. The caliber designation ''45-70'' is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight & the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped ''-MODEL 1886-''. The lower receiver tang is roll-stamped with the ''1884/1885'' patent markings in two lines behind the trigger & the SN ''28675'' in script letters ahead of the rear tang screw. Bore is excellent & bright. Barrel carries a block mounted front sight with steel blade & a folding 3 leaf rear sight. Receiver carries the staple mounted saddle ring. The stock has a carbine style buttplate. Forend has the correct model 1876 style forearm cap & spring fastened lower barrel band. A caliber .40-82 W.C.F. Model 1886 full stock carbine, SN ''14105'' is illustrated & described on page 308 of ''THE WINCHESTER BOOK'' by George Madis. Madis notes that all Model 1886 carbines are scarce & that only a few early production Model 1886 carbines were manufactured with full-length forearms. This rifle was previously sold with a correct Cody Winchester Factory Letter confirming configuration as a carbine, caliber & production date & a Winchester Rarity letter from the Cody records. However, those original letters have been misplaced by the consignor, but we do have a copy of the factory records letter. This very rare & unique carbine is highly collectible & would be a fantastic addition to any lever collection. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 10000 to 15000
