Description

EXCEEDINGLY RARE Winchester, Model 1895 ''National Guard of Colorado'', CAL. Unmarked 30-40 Krag, MFG. 1899, SN: 19855, Lever Action, 28'' Round barrel. The right side of the receiver has the Colorado National Guard marking: ''NATIONAL GUARD OF COLORADO.'' The factory American walnut musket stocks, with finger groove forearm & hand guard are excellent, solid & original. The excellent wood finish appears original, with small scratches, scuffs & contusions. There is a large gouge on the bottom right side of the forearm, which has been smoothed & touched up. The original blue metal finish is 80% on barrel, 50% on receiver, mag & lever, with areas of loss having a thin brown patina. The top of the receiver is marked ''1D13.'' The left side of the receiver has standard Winchester markings. The musket lacks a caliber marking. The ''KSM'' Kelly S. Morse military inspectors markings are stamped on the lever & buttplate. Morse is listed as an inspector for the 1895 US contract musket. 10,000 of these rifles were purchased by the Ordnance Department with 9,900 of them being sold to Cuba. If correct, that leaves just 100 being sold to state militias of which this example was assigned to Colorado. Barrel carries a pinned blade front sight, rear aperture sight graduate to 1,800 yards & marked ''200,'' ''300,'' ''500,'' & ''700'' on the left side. Fitted with bayonet lug on the front barrel band, sling swivels & stacking loop. Comes complete with a rare ''Winchester Repeating Arms Co.'' marked bayonet, including the even rarer original metal & leather scabbard, which retains traces of original blue on the hardware. Bore is excellent. The stock carries a sliding trapdoor carbine buttplate. These Colorado National Guard Model 1895 muskets are seldom encountered & when found generally show hard use. These 1895 muskets were used extensively by the Colorado National Guard in suppressing miner's unions during the Colorado Labor Wars of 1903 & 1904. This very scarce Model 1895 variant is missing from even the most advanced Winchester collections. This unique Western American rifle of provenance is an excellent example & is very collectible in this complete & fine condition. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 5000 to 10000
