Description

EXCEEDINGLY RARE Spencer Arms Co., Model 1882 Pump Shotgun, CAL: 12 GA, MFG: 1882-89, SN: 3140, Pump Action Shotgun, 32'' Damascus barrel. The Spencer-Roper Pump Action Shotgun was the first commercially successful pump shotgun, while not the first design to use a slide action, it was the first to be mass produced & successfully sold. Co-designed by Christopher Spencer, perhaps best known for his repeating rifle, & Sylvester Roper. The pump action was not Ropers first shotgun design, in 1866, he patented a revolving shotgun & later in 1889 he developed another pump action design. In April 1882, Spencer & Roper were granted a patent on their design & subsequently established the Spencer Arms Company in Amherst, Massachusetts. They introduced the Spencer Model 1882, based on their pump action designs. Chambered in 10 & 12 ga, with the latter being the most popular, the 1882 has a tubular magazine below the barrel which holds five black powder shells. The Spencer-Roper has a complex action, by cycling the pump the guns pivoted breech block drops below the receiver allowing the next shell to enter the action while almost simultaneously the spent shell is ejected out the top of the gun. What appears to be another trigger facing backwards inside the trigger guard is actually the hammer spur. Ergonomically the early shotguns had very small pump handles and deeply swept stocks this changed in later models, with larger pump handles being introduced. The original round pistol grip wood stock on this example is very good & solid, despite a tightly repaired stress crack emanating from the upper tang & traveling along the left wrist to the lower tang. The stock has been lightly sanded & has an older refinish, which is very good. The gutta percha small forend is also very good, despite the smoothing of the checkering, which can still be faintly seen. The metal has fully worn gun metal gray, with some thin brown patina. The thumbprint pattern of the damascus barrel is viewable & it holds a single front bead. Bore is very good, with some spotty roughness. Stock carries the original hard rubber buttplate, which is missing a 1'' chip. While this Spencer shotgun is largely forgotten by even the most advanced collectors, it remains an important historical footnote as the first commercially successful pump-action shotgun. Highly collectible. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 2000
