Colt, U.S Army Model 1909, CAL: 45, MFG: 1911, SN: 40778, Double Action Revolver, 5 1/2'' barrel. The top of the barrel is marked in two lines ''COLT'S PT F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.'', ''PAT'D AUG.5.1884 JUNE 5.1900 JULY 4 1905''. The left side of the barrel is marked ''COLT D.A.45'' & the bottom of the barrel is marked ''UNITED STATES PROPERTY''. The butt is marked ''U.S ARMY MODEL 1909 No.40778''. The full SN can be found on the butt, frame & cylinder gate. The left side of the frame has a worn Rampant Colt. The right side of the frame above the grip is marked ''R.A.C'' & behind the cylinder is marked ''F.B.''. The replaced wood grips are excellent & minty, with a slightly loose fit. The military finish rates 70%, with spotting & areas worn to metal grey. Bore is excellent, with roughness & light intermittent spotting. The barrel holds a blade front sight. Lanyard loop present. In 1899, combat reports from the Philippines showed that the .38 caliber bullets repeatedly failed to stop Moro fighters. The complaints caused the U.S. Army to re-issue the now retired .45 caliber Colt Single Action Army revolvers with newly shorten 5'' barrels. These old revolvers stopped the Moro fighters in their tracks & also played a key role in the Army's decision to replace the M1892 with the .45 caliber New Service revolver in 1909. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 800 to 1600
