Merwin & Bray Fire Arms Co, 3rd Model Plant Pocket Pistol, CAL: .30 Cup-Fire, MFG: 1860's, SN: 2876, Single Action Cup-Fire Revolver, 3 1/2'' octagon barrel. The wood grips are excellent & solid, with contusions, scrapes & small areas of flaking finish. The top rib of the barrel is marked ''MERWIN & BRAY FIRE ARMS CO. N.Y''. The cylinder is marked in a single line ''PATENTED JULY 12, 1859 & JULY 21, 1863''. The original metal blue finish on the barrel rates 85%, with edges worn to gun metal grey & toned to a brown patina. The brass receiver is silver plated, retaining 65% coverage, with areas flaking revealing the brass frame. Bore is excellent & bright, with intermittent pitting. The barrel holds a small blade front sight. Matching SN on the bottom of the barrel & butt. Tip of the hammer is broken off. These early cartridge guns are intriguing, as they represent the rough path that the firearms industry traveled during the Civil War period. These early cartridge revolvers saw significant use with private soldiers & officers during the course of the war. This example would be a fine inclusion to any collection of Civil War era revolvers.
