U.S. Model 1842 Pistol by I. N. Johnson, 54 Cal percussion pistol, MFG: 1852, SN: None, 8 1/2'' barrel, wood stock has two old chip repairs to base with one hair line crack to left side of grip, otherwise nice finish patina, brass fixtures have a smooth mustered patina, barrel & locks are silver with some speckling, has ''H'' inspectors mark on brass back strap up high, has ''H. Aston'' stamped on right side lock, plus ''MIDDtn CONN 1852'', bore is good, smooth with some roughness, seams to function well as it should.
Model 1842 Pistol by H. Aston, MCH accession #2017.505.2; Henry Aston produced 24,000 for his first contract (1846-51), and an additional 6,000 as H. Aston & Co. (1851-52). The firm sold its factory and all its assets to business partner Ira N. Johnson (distinguished from flintlock pistol maker Robert Johnson, of uncertain kinship) in 1852. I. N. Johnson, awarded a third and final contract, delivered 10,000 from 1853-55. Most pistols in the three contracts went to the U. S. War Department, though perhaps a limited number with imperfections that failed government inspection were sold commercially or to state militias. Black Powder, No FFL Req - Value: 1200 to 2400
