EXTRODINARY FACTORY ENGRAVED & DELUXE Marlin Model 1897 Rifle, .22 RF, MFG: 1902, SN: 246648, Lever Action Rifle, 26'' Tapered octagon barrel, 1/2 mag. This special order, extremely high-grade rifle features Factory No. 3 engravings, which includes a scroll engraved receiver with large game scene vignettes on either side. The rifle also carries extremely high-grade XXX Walnut stocks featuring deluxe No. ''F'' checkering & mounted with a nickel scroll & floral engraved Schuetzen Swiss buttplate, with the monogram the initials ''HEC'' superimposed over one another at center. The stock features a scalloped pistol grip & a graceful factory cheekpiece adorning the left side of the butt. The buttstock & forend display fantastic feathered & fiery grain, accented beautifully with the finely carved diamond shapes of the ''F'' checkering pattern. The stocks carry the original high luster finish, with very few handling marks or rubs. The No. 3 engraved receiver features fabulous game scenes depicting a dog chasing a deer in a wooded scene on right, & buck & doe in a mountainous vignette on the left. Five flats of the barrel show 2 1/2'' of scroll engraving at the breech & the forend cap also displays decorative accent scroll engraving. The condition of the metal is very fine, with the barrel & magazine retaining 95% of the original factory blue finish. The case-hardened action shows mellowing of original case-colors, which has toned to a smoky pewter color, with muted colors remaining mostly on the left side of receiver & in protected areas. The receiver also shows scattered small specks of oxidation staining. The forend cap, Swiss buttplate, lever & hammer all retain 98% bright original nickel plated finish, with some light oxidation. The top of the barrel is marked ''Marlin Firearms Co. NEW-HAVEN CT., U.S.A. / PATD NOV. 19. 1878. APRIL 2. 1889. AUG. 12. 1890. MAR. 1, 1892.'' & floral scroll engraving at the rear. The underside of the receiver is marked with the SN ''246648''. The inside of the frame is marked ''PAT. JUNE 8, 1897''. The top of the receiver has a single hole neatly drilled & tapped, with filler screw present obscuring part of the ''MA'' in the engraved MARLIN SAFETY''. The upper tang is marked ''MODEL / 1897''. Bore is excellent & bright. The rifle is equipped with a period & likely original Cataract Tool & Optical telescopic sight mounted on their proprietary adjustable scope mounts, which are very nicely accented with nickel plating to compliment the other nickeled features on the rifle. Stevens purchased Cataract Tool & Optical in 1901 & this rifle was made in 1902. Interestingly, the front sight is a windgauge folding sporting sight by Stevens, which leads to the assumption that the scope & front sight were supplied at the same time by Stevens. The rear sight is a two leaf folding sight & the receiver is fitted with a Lyman tang peep. The scope is mounted in dovetails cut into the top flat of the barrel & the rear adjustment device is also mounted on a plate mounted to the left side of the barrel with a square notch neatly cut into the forend. The metal condition of the scope & mounts is excellent, commensurate with the balance of the rifle. The lenses are cloudy with some visibility & would likely benefite from a proper cleaning. The rifle has all matching SNs in addition to the receiver stamping, ncluding in the top tang inlet of the stock, the left side of the upper tang & on underside of buttplate. Action is crisp & smooth. What a fabulous rifle remaining in all original condition. Again, this is an exceptionally rare & extremely fine Marlin rifle that should excite any Marlin enthusiast. It is truly investment quality & clearly one of the finest Marlin rifles we have ever offered. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 20000 to 35000
