Spencer Repeating Rifle Co., Model Repating Rifle (ARMY), CAL: 56-56 (52 cal), MFG: 1860-69, SN: 23145, Lever Action Repeating Rifle, 30' barrel. By the end of the Civil War more than 144,000 Spencer rifles & carbines had been manufactured with over two-thirds of those purchased by the U.S. government. The three line address on the receiver reads: ''SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS/ PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860''. The original straight grip wood stocks are very good & solid. There are numerous small contusions, scrapes & dings consitent with military use. There are two faint cartouches on the left side of the stock behind the plate screw neither is fully legible. The stocks do not appear to be sanded & therefore appear to carry the original finish, with some added oils over time. The metal finish has worn to a mix of gun metal grey & a spotty thin layer of brown patina. Bore is very good & bright, but with some light pitting amongst proud rifling. Barrel carries a steel lug front sight with ivory blade (partially missing) & a folding ladder rear sight, with 2 to 8 graduations & 800 yard center notch. Smooth metal trapdoor buttplate, with internal mag tube. Sling loops carry a period leather sling. This rifle was likely used during Civil War &/or Indian/American Wars to follow. These are somewhat rare, a true piece of American history. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 5000
