RARE Spencer Repeating Rifle Co., Model Repeating Sporting Rifle (Late Model), CAL: We believe it to be what Spencer called a 56-46 cal, which is more commonly known as a 44-100 RF, MFG: 1865-68, SN: 628, Lever Action Repeating Rifle, 30'' Round barrel. This is a fairly rare Spencer as best estimates puts full production amount at close to 2,000 sporting rifles. The three line address on the receiver reads: ''SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS/ PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860''. The original straight grip wood stocks are excellent & solid. There are several finish level tiny contusions, scrapes & dings. Finish is excellent. Sporting rifles end caps have always been called ''pewter'', which in this case is an alloy made up of 85-99% tin & had some antimony added as a hardener for durability. Tin was used for its low melting point to avoid burning the forearm wood during assembly. The restored metal finish on the barrel rates 98%. The case-hardened receiver has been polished some & cleaned of spotty areas of tiny pitting, but still display shadowy outlines of case-colors, with bright colors on the internals. Bore is very good & bright, but with some light pitting amongst proud rifling. The receiver carries the original Spencer tang sight, which has a sliding vertical peep for elevation, but no provision for windage adjustments. On late model production sporting rifles the SN's are offset to the left of the tang sight, as is the case with this example. Tang sight production #'s can be found at the bottom rear of the staff, but not always. According to Spencer expert Matt Sears, these tang #'s have been encountered from #1 to #95, (this rifle carries #32), with only a few repeated #s in the range. They do not correspond to the SN of the rifle, nor do they run for the full production. The barrel carries a steel lug front sight, with small blade & a forward position 1860 smooth ladder rear sight, which correctly carries no graduations. Assembly number 257 is found on the right side of the breechblock & also appear on the lever, block & percussion slide. The same 257 is also found stamped on the buttend of the forearm & under the forearm on the underside of the barrel. In addition, the SN 628 is stamped on the underside of the barrel under the forearm. The stock carries the smooth metal trapdoor buttplate, with internal mag tube with the later version knurled or ridged finish gate. This is a beautiful rifle & is fairly rare, as a numbers matching example of a Sporting Rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 6000
