Description

MAGNIFICENT ENGRAVED Remington Custom Shop Rifle, Model 8 N0. 6 ''Premier'' Grade or later known as an ''F'' Grade, Marked .32 REM Cal., MFG: 1911, SN: 21974, Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' barrel, This rifle, invented by John Browning, was America's first successful semi auto high-power rifle. It has a 4 shot detachable magazine. These take-down rifles were often broken down into the 22'' & 20'' halves & placed into leather cases for train rides to countryside hunts & shoots. This No. 6 ''Premier or F'' grade rifle was the highest grade rifle Remington offered in their catalog. Factory specifications for the Premier grade read, ''stock & fore-arm of the finest Circassian walnut inlaid with gold name plate & finished with delicate, but elaborate checkering. The engraving on this rifle is equal to that on the Premier grade Auto shotgun & is all that could be desired by the most exacting sportsman. All working parts were hand polished in the custom shop. The large receiver side panels are covered with what Remington marketed as ''nearly 100% coverage of deep rich scroll hand engraving, with engraved vignettes on both sides of receiver & a large game head engraved on the top of the receiver.'' In this case, the left side of the receiver has a standing buck deer & feeding doe, while the right side of the receiver displays a black bear & a standing moose. The receiver top is engraved with a shoulder mount of a black bear. Engraving also found on base of magazine, safety, trigger guard, tangs & barrel jacket. The special-order rifle has beautifully contrasting figured grain, while the finely detailed factory checkering is 24 lines-per-inch. This particular rifle was ordered with the rarer & upgraded round knob pistol grip stock & hand oiled finish. The factory inlaid gold initial plate in stock remains blank. The overall condition of the checkering & wood finish is excellent. The original metal blue finish on the barrel rates 95%, 90% on receiver & other metal parts. Bore is very good & bright. Barrel is mounted with an adjustable rear sight & small blade front sight. Factory hard rubber buttplate. Any Remington factory engraved firearm is rare, but examples like this highest grade 8 ''PREMIER'' are extremely rare. The main reason for this was they were almost cost prohibitive, as according to the 1936 Remington price list, when the Model 8 production ceased, for the cost of one 8 ''F'' grade rifle, one could purchase five 8A's ''standard grades'' rifles & over 600 rounds of factory ammunition. A very unique & extremely rare rifle & an example of the finest early 20th century engraving.* FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 10000 to 15000
