Winchester, Model 1890, 1st Variation, CAL: .22 LONG, MFG: 1891, SN: 8609, Pump Action Rifle, 24 3/8'' Octagon barrel. Early 2nd yr case-hardened gun. The original straight grip stock & corncob forend are very good & solid, however there are two missing chips at the upper corners where the stock meets the receiver & a 1.5'' missing sliver along the left side of the lower tang. Stock carries an added layer of finish over the original finish, while the forend carries the original finish. They have minor scrapes, nicks & dings. The metal blue finish on the barrel rates 70%, but starting to tone to a brown patina, particularly on edges & in areas of loss. The blue on the mag tube has worn & toned to a mix of remaining blue gun, metal gray & brown patina. The rifle appears to have been a half nickeled rifle originally. The case-hardened receiver appears to have been factory nickeled although virtually all the nickel on the receiver has worn away except some silvering in the most protected areas. The only real evidance of nickel remaining is on the mag retaining loops, which still retain about 30% of the original nickel. Bore is poor & rough, with lots of pitting. The barrel holds a fixed rear sight & blade front sight. The buttstock carries a smooth crescent metal buttplate. The upper portion of the internal carrier was previously broken & an attempt to solder was done. Apparently, it was not successful as the forward portion of the upper arm is missing & solder remains. It does not appear therefore to cycle the rounds properly & this part will likely need to be replaced & possibly others. This rifle is therefore being sold ''AS IS'' as it will need repair. Early production 1st variation rifles are always desireable & even with repairs needed, this .22 Long example is still collectible. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 400 to 800
