Description

RARE ENGRAVED Remington UMC, Model 11, ''F' PREMIER GRADE or GRADE 6, 12 GA., MFG. 1920, SN: 236639, Semi Auto Shotgun. Marked FULL, 2 3/4'', 28'' Ventilated rib single bead barrel. John Browning presented this design (which he called his best achievement) to Winchester, where he had sold most of his previous designs. When Winchester refused his terms, Browning went to Remington. Tragically, the President of Remington died of a heart attack as Browning waited to offer them the gun. This forced Browning to look overseas to produce the shotgun. It was manufactured by FN (a company that had already produced Browning-designed pistols) starting in 1902 as the Auto 5. Browning would later license the design to Remington, who produced it as their Model 11 (1911-1947). The Remington Model 11 was the first auto-loading shotgun made in America, originally as the ''Remington Autoloading Shotgun (1905-1910)'' before it was changed to the Model 11 in 1911. This is a Special ordered shotgun from Remington's custom shop & master engraved. It displays extensive full coverage engraving, with six separate game scene vignettes featuring pairs of hunting dogs, grouse, snipe & flying mallards. Additional dog's profile engraved on bottom of trigger guard. Remington's Master Engraver at this time was Joseph F. Loy assisted by Simeon S. Rogers. Loy's animal engravings were truly works of art. In those days, Remington did not allow their engravers to sign their work. The engraving details on this example are consistent with Loy's work. The metal blue finish is 97% on barrel, 95% receiver, with loss mainly at the carry point on the belly of the receiver. The fancy, high grade, fine 24 lines per inch hand checkered, capped pistol grip, Circassia walnut stocks are excellent, original & solid, with nice figure. The buttstock has an initial plate that is engraved with ''LS''. The finish is excellent, with a few very minor finish contusions or scrapes. Stock carries a Pachmayr White Line ventilated recoil pad. Bore is excellent, Functionality is excellent & tight. This was the highest grade Model 11 available from the Remington Custom shop in Ilion NY. Fantastic hand craftsmanship.* FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 7000 to 10000
