RARE Spencer Arms Co., Model 1890 Pump Shotgun, CAL: 12 GA, MFG: 1882-89, SN: 4598, Pump Action Shotgun, 28'' Damascus barrel. This is an early Spencer marked 1890, rather than the later production Bannerman stamped 1890 guns. The original round pistol grip wood stock on this example is very good & solid, despite being well used & worn. Checkering has worn thin & there are numerous scrapes, scratches & contusions to the worn thin original finish. The gutta percha (hard rubber) forend is also very good, despite the smoothing of the checkering. The metal has fully worn gun metal gray, with some spotty areas of thin brown patina. The thumbprint pattern of the damascus barrel is viewable & it holds a single front bead. Bore is good, with some spotty roughness. The mag tub retention lug at the front of mag has been nicely soldered back onto the lower portion of the barrel. Stock carries the original hard rubber buttplate. What appears to be another trigger facing backwards inside the trigger guard is actually the hammer spur. While this Spencer shotgun is largely forgotten by even the most advanced collectors, it remains an important historical footnote as an early commercially successful pump-action shotgun.
