Belgian Zulu Shotgun, CAL: 12GA, MFG: circa 1860's, SN: 889, Breech Load Single Shot Shotgun, 30 5/8'' barrel. Most of these firearms were originally a French percussion muzzleloading musket. Some of them were stamped as being a Model 1857, while many others had no markings at all. People who are more familiar with these firearms interchangeably call them: Model 1857, Model 1867, Model 1857/67, Belgian 1857, French 1857, Zulu, Belgian 1857/67 Zulu. Through trade, a significant amount of these rifles were converted in Belgium to be actual breechloading rifles or shotguns in 1867. The newest conversion included a chamber expansion to 12 Gauge & the bore being smoothed out. This final conversion allowed for the weapon to accept what was more modern 12 gauge shotgun shells. The straight grip wood stock is good, having been sanded. There are multiple cracks, edge chips & a crude cut forend edge. The barrel does not seat tight in the stock. The metal has fully worn to metal grey, with areas toned to brown patina. There is intermittent pitting & speckling throughout the metal surfaces. Bore is good, rough with intermittent pitting. No sight bead. Stock has a smooth metal buttplate. Breech does not lock in closed position unless hammer is on nipple. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 100 to 200
