RARE Colt, SAA, 8th Cavalry U.S Artillery Revolver, CAL: 45 LC, MFG: 1874 (frame SN), SN: 10709, Single Action Revolver, 5 1/2'' barrel. 2nd year production. Records from Springfield Research Service list remaining information on revolvers SN#'s 10695 & 10715. These revolvers were issued to Troop C of the 8th U.S. Cavalry in 1876. They served in NV, OR, AZ, NM & TX during the Indian Wars between 1867 & 1888. This pistol's SN falls between these two revolvers & likely had the same history. Although not marked, or no longer visible, Ainsworth inspected these first of the U.S. Colt SAA revolvers, which were later converted, as seen only through SN 14998 & rarely encountered today. These guns were frequently rebuilt in arsenals & therefore are rarely encountered with matching SN's. The top of the barrel is stamped ''COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.'', the left side of the frame is marked with a two line patent dates ''PAT. SEPT. 19, 1871, JULY. 2, 1872'', followed by the U.S. ownership stamp. The frame is stamped ''10709'', the trigger guard is stamped ''95821'' over ''G'', the butt is also stamped ''95821'' over ''G''. Any stampings on the bottom of the grips are no longer visible''. The wood grips are very good, as lightly sanded & reoiled. There are tiny corner & edge chips & other very minor contusions & scrapes. The metal blue finishes remains in more protected areas at 30%, with the rest worn gun metal gray, with a thin brown patina. Bore is excellent, with minor spotting & speckling. The barrel carries a blade front sight & the frame has an integrated rear groove. Action is tight & smooth, with the cylinder timing correctly functioning properly. The Colt Single Action Army is a worldwide icon of the U.S. & the Western Frontier. Wielded by the long arm of the law, military & bad men, the famous Single Action Army became well-known as the Peacemaker. This Artillery model & likely 8th Cavalry example is a top level SAA collectible.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 5000 to 10000
