Winchester, Model 1876, 1st/2nd Variation, CAL: 45-75?, MFG: 1876, SN: 2883, Lever Action Rifle, 22'' Round barrel, Full mag. This is an unusual rifle as the serial number places it in the 2nd year of production & thus part of the first variation of rifles, however it carries the early dust cover configuration of the 2nd variation rifles. There is no caliber marking, but we believe it to be 45-75. The straight grip wood stock & forend are very good, appearing to have been cleaned & reoiled long ago, with several handling marks, scratches & contusions. The metal finish has fully worn or been polished way, leaving it gun metal gray, with some black spotting & light pitting. Loading gate has some original blue. The barrel carries the 1, 3, & 5 flip-up rear sight & a carbine box style front sight. Bore is fair, with lots of roughness & pitting amongst worn rifling. The mag tub is a replacement & is made of brass. The rifle used to carry a saddle ring which was removed the lug modified into a screw. The barrel band does not hold the forend tight & in place & the forend slides back & forth along the mag tube. Action remains smooth & tight. Rifle still presents well, but needs some adjustment or work. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
