RARE Savage, Model 1895, marked .303 Cal., MFG: 1895, SN: 4271, Lever Action Rifle, 26'' Tapered octagon barrel. The Savage Model 1895 lever action rifle was the predecessor of the famed Savage Model 1899. It was lightyears ahead of its time when the bulk of the lever action rifles being made has to use blunt nose bullets to keep from igniting the cartridge which proceeded it into the magazine. The rotary style magazine invented by Savage meant that no bullet rested upon the primer of another cartridge, which allowed for the European style Spitzer bullets to be used; which meant for better velocity & flatter trajectory on longer ranges, unheard of at the time in any other lever action rifle made. These early 1895's were actually built for Savage by Marlin in New Haven, CT. The short production span for the Model 1895 & the small survival rate makes it very difficult to find surviving models in decent condition. The factory straight grip wood stock & schnabel forend are very good & appear to carry what is believed to be semi deluxe factory checkering. They retain most of the original factory finish, with some oils used over time. The stock displays numerous small scuffs, scratches or minor contusions from typical use. The original metal blue finish is toning gray, with 90% coverage on the barrel. The receiver has a thin brown patina over a gun metal gray base. The lever displays brown patina, with faint remains of case-coloring on the inner parts. Visible cartridge counter on left side of receiver. This model also has the bolt with a visual cocking indicator located on top that indicates ''S'' for safe & ''C'' for when cocked & ready to fire. Neat idea that works but was quickly abandoned with the new Model 1899. The stock carries the original crescent metal buttplate. Fitted with an adjustable rear & blade front sights. Bore is very good. Action is smooth & tight. Sling studs. While sources vary which indicate 5,000 to 8,000 made/sold between 1895-99, the rifle comes with a factory letter which indicates this is one of 8,200 rifles which were produced by Marlin for Savage & probably all the first year. A unique early & antique rifle. No FFL Req - Value: 1500 to 3000
