C. Sharps Arms Co, Model 1874, CAL: marked .40 2 1/10, MFG: Modern, SN: 74-911, Lever Action Falling Block Rifle, 30'' Octagon barrel. From C.Sharps Arms Co: ''Arguably the most famous single shot rifle of the American West, the 1874 Sharps falling block rifle story began in 1848 when Christian Sharps patented his first breech-loading rifle & carbine design using paper cartridges ignited by a separate musket cap. Throughout the 1850s & 60s, the Sharps breech-loading rifle became popular with military & civilian users alike. As metallic cartridges were developed & became available the venerable breech-loading Sharps was a perfect candidate for conversion to the metallic cartridges of the time. Many of the Civil War Era Sharps rifles & carbines were converted to early metallic cartridges. The 1874 Model was introduced by the Sharps Rifle Co. as the first purpose-built rifle to house the new breed of powerful metallic cartridges. It quickly showed itself as being a rugged & reliable rifle perfectly suited to the rigors of the frontier. This reputation led to the 1874s nickname & C. Sharps Rifle Co. Inc. trademark of ''Old Reliable''. The C. Sharps Arms Co. Inc. continues the legacy of the original C. Sharps & Co. & Sharps Rifle Co. by building heirloom quality reproductions of the Sharps 1874 rifles like the rifle offered in this lot. The original straight grip wood stocks, with schnabel forend, are excellent. There are minor contusions & handling marks to the original finish. The factory metal blue finish on the barrel rates 99%. The receiver, hammer & lever are case-hardened, retaining vivid case-colors. Bore is excellent. Fitted with a factory long range rear tang sight, while the barrel carries a full buckhorn/sliding ladder rear sight & globe front sight. The front sight can be modified with different reticles. Stock carries a case-colored checkered metal buttplate. This is a fabulous & beautifully made, high quality reproduction of an original 1874 Sharps rifle. FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 4000
