Massachusettes Arms Co, Maynard Patent No.16 Improved Target 1873 & 1882, CAL: 38-50, MFG: 1860's-1890, SN: 3464, Breech Loading Single Shot Lever Action Rifle, 28'' half octagon half round barrel. The No. 16 Improved Target rifle in calibers ranging from .22 to .40-70 with multiple interchangeable barrels. This example measured .380 on the micrometer, leading us to believe it's chambered in 38-50. The left side of the receiver is marked in four lines ''EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27. 1851 / DEC. 6. 1859.'' followed by ''1873''. The right side of the receiver is marked in four lines ''MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS. 1882''. The original checkered fancy walnut stock with schnabel tip forend is excellent. The wood displays beautiful figure. There are minor contusions & scrapes to the finish. Protective oils have been added over time, contributing to some darkening. The metal finish on the barrel & receiver have fully toned to a brown patina. Bore is excellent. The upper tang holds a Vernier peep sight with stud rest & the barrel has a windage adjustable globe front sight with beaded post reticle. Stock carries a Swiss competition style hooked buttplate, also interchangeable with a hunting buttplate.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 4000
