RARE Remington, Model 14 Thumbnail Transition, .32 REM, MFG. 1920, SN:78350, Pump Action Take-down Rifle, 22'' barrel. Several modifications occurred over the production years of the Model 14. In 1919 the standard Model 14 became known as the Model 14A & they were stamped as such on the barrel. In 1920, the safety was changed from a cross bolt safety behind the trigger to a thumbnail safety located on the bolt itself. This new bolt safety was not popular as shooters & hunters found it difficult to slide it both on & off, especially when hunting with gloves. So strong was the opposition that Remington reverted back to the crossbolt safety located on the back of the triggerguard for the remainder of production. This particular rifle was made in 1920, but retains the 1919 & older ''Model 14'' barrel marking. It also carries the short lived bolt safety from 1920, which have become sought after amongst collectors. While it has the rare bolt safety, it was still early in the transition & thus was assembled with the remaining inventory of a trigger guard that was manufactured for the crossbolt safety. The hole was simply factory filled with a plug, so not to waste the part as previously manufactured. Thus the rifle is a transition rifle carrying parts from both 1919 & 1920. The original flat pistol grip wood stocks are excellent & solid, but does show thinning of the original finish, along with minor scratches & contusions. The original metal blue finish on the receiver & barrel rates 90%, with additional wear to the belly & trigger guard. The blue on the mag tube rates 50%. The barrel carries the correct wheel adjusting rear sight, only used on this model, & a standard low rise blade front sight. The stock carries the original, but rarer option, tear drop metal buttplate. Bore is excellent. Tight smooth action. A very nice original & collectible model 14, with the rare & desired bolt safety. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1200 to 2000
