RARE Winchester, Model 1893, 12 Ga., MFG. 1896, SN: 24785, Pump Action Shotgun, MOD choke, Chambered for 2 5/8'' ONLY, 32'' barrel. The Winchester Model 1893 Slide Action Shotgun was designed & patented by the Browning Brothers, & was the first market successful slide-action shotgun. It was introduced in May of 1893, & was manufactured until July of 1897. A fixed frame shotgun, it was made in 12 gauge only, with a 2-5/8'' chamber only, with 30'' & 32'' rolled steel Full choke barrels as standard. Production of the Model 1893 was relatively short lived due to the action proving itself to be too weak when smokeless ammunition was introduced in the mid 1890's. This design flaw was corrected with the introduction of the Winchester Model 1897 Slide Action Shotgun. The total production for the Model 1893 was just 34,176 guns & they are therefore relatively rare & highly sought after by collectors. The original rounded knob wood stocks are excellent, with some small scratches & contusions to the original finish. There is one longer 6'' surface scratch on the left side of the stock. The original metal rates 40% on receiver, 30% on barrel & 80% on mag tube, with areas of thinning starting to tone to a brown patina, with the rest worn a gun metal gray. Bore is very good. Pump action is tight. Single front bead. Original steel buttplate. Comes with a Cody Winchester Records Letter confirming configuration & dates, along with a date the shotgun was returned for repair in 1903. Likely this was to make a repair caused by the known issue as mentioned above & a preventative issue, but the record does not provide detail. Regardless, its an excellent original example of a fairly low production shotgun & very collectible. 12 7/8'' LOP. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 800 to 1500
