RARE!!! & EARLY!!!, Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, Type 99 Navy Special. Cal: 7.7x58mm Arisaka, MFG: 1944, S/N: 158, Bolt action Rifle, 26 1/2'' barrel. These rifles were made by the Japanese navy because at this time all the rifle arsenals were tied up with making rifles for the army, & with shortages going around of materials & factorys, there was no extra capacity to make rifles for the navy, so they took their own factory's at the ship yard & came up with a type 99 that was almost entirely made of cast iron, other than the barrel & bolt body, while normally a cast iron receiver would not last more than a handful of rounds before exploding, they achieved a ''functioning'' rifle by having a barrel extension so that the locking recesses for the locking logs are part of the barrel, not the receiver, so the receiver only acts to hold everything in place & not a pressure bearing component. Production numbers vary wildly on these, collectors have said up to 17,000 to as little as 6,000, but either way they are a rare & very collectable weapon today in any condition. Even with these rifles being made with the intention of using full power military rounds unlike the trainers, collectors do not recommend shooting them from their scarcity and with the fragile receivers. The semi-pistol grip wood stock is good, stock has been sanded down, heavily in areas & re-finished, metal is proud to wood in areas,. The metal black paint finish which is factory they were painted not blued, rates 80% on the barrel with a few spots of wear & 60% on the receiver with spots of wear & thinning. Left side of receiver is marked with the part # ''964'', the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal stamp, & S/N, top of receiver has the navy Anchor mark, & faint remnants of ''9 9 Shiki Toku'' marking or ''Special Type 99'' in English, top of barrel is marked with the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal stamp, ''964'', ''A - 93'', bolt, barrel bands, trigger guard, & butt plate are all marked with the ''964'' part #, the Safety knob on the bolt has a piece broken off but all other parts of the bolt are precent & in working order, missing one screw for front barrel band, floor plate/trigger guard screws appear to be modern replacement but with the hobbled together nature of these rifle it could be original, paint appears to match. Bore is very good, bright with light roughness. Barleycorn front sight with protective wings, Tangent Aperture rear sight marked 3 to 15. Cast iron Butt plate with black paint finish.no cleaning rod or sling mounts were made for these rifles. A excellent & rare find that's sadly been sanded down and possible has replaced parts but its still a good collectors piece. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 600 to 2000
