CUSTOM U.S. Smith Corona, Model 03 A3 Custom Sporting Rifle, CAL: 30-06 Ackley Improved, MFG: 1943, SN: 3614706, Bolt Action Rifle, 24 1/4'' tapered barrel. The .30-06 Ackley Improved is a wildcat cartridge formed by firing a .30-06 Springfield cartridge in a rifle that has been chambered or re-chambered for the ''improved'' version. Upon firing, the case ''blows out'' to conform to the new, enlarged chamber. The new dimension has a reduced body taper & increased shoulder angle compared to the original .30-06 Springfield case. By doing so, the volume is increased a small amount, less than five percent. You cannot get the fatter case of a .30-06 Ackley Improved into a standard .30-06 Springfield rifle chamber, but the reverse is obviously true. The custom cheeked & capped pistol grip Monte Carlo wood stock on this rifle is very good & solid, having a slant cut rose wood forend tip in the style of Weatherby stocks. There are numerous small scrapes, scratches & contusions to the original finish. The barrel & receiver have been polished & smoothed from their military days when they would have been parkerized finish. They now having a typical sporting rifle hot blue rating 90% overall, with more wear on the floor plate & trigger guard. Bore is very good & bright. The receiver carries a Weaver K4 60-C scope on Weaver rings & mounts. There are no open sights on barrel as the original front sight was removed during the sporterizing of the rifle. Buttstock carries a ventilated recoil pad. Sling studs. A solid custom built sporting rifle in a unique caliber. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 300 to 600
