Springfield Armory 1898 Krag , CAL: 30-40 Kraig, MFG: 1901, SN: 315228, Bolt Action Rifle, 24'' original barrel. Stamped U.S. on receiver. The original cut-down stock is good, but with numerous small contusions, scrapes & scratches to what appears to be the original finish, as typical or war use. It has The circle P proof stamping behind the trigger guard along with a small ''50''. In front of the trigger guard is the date ''1930'' & a row of worn illegible letters & numbers. The boxed ''JSA'' inspector's initials & 1901 date inspectors cartouche is clearly stamped above the left side trigger guard, with the letters ''H.H.'' stamped below the receiver sight. The number ''5.5'' is stamped on the upper comb just in front of the upper tang of buttplate. The name ''OTTO COSS'' is stamped inside the forend finger groove on both sides. Otto Coss was a well known blacksmith & wood worker out of Montana. There is actually a working forge blacksmith shop museum run by the Madison Valley History Association in his name. Stock has been cutoff 1 1/2'' above the forend retention barrel band. The metal finish has worn mostly gun metal gray, with a thin brown patina & some remains of original finish in protected areas. The receiver carries a Lyman adjustable receiver sight, while the barrel carries the original front blade sight. No visible markings on barrel. Bore is good. Buttstock carries a trapdoor metal buttplate & sling loops. A interesting Krag, with a curios tie to Otto. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 200 to 400
