SCARCE!! COLT M1911 U.S. NAVY. Cal: .45 ACP, MFG: 1913, S/N: 40218, Semi-Auto Pistol, 5'' Barrel. When the navy adopted the M1911 in 1913 they wanted their pistols marked U.S Navy, instead of U.S. Army, this would cost a extra $1.50 a pistol to mark them, ultimately leading to them to stop marking pistols U.S Navy & all the pistols being marked U.S. Army in march of 1915. The double diamond checkered walnut grips are good, they are well worn & darkened from use/age, three notch's on right grip diamond possible kill notches. The metal has toned to a nice gray patina with thinned bluing in protected areas, metal surface has superficial scratches on top of slide. Left side of slide is marked ''PATENTED APR 20 1897'', ''SEPT 9.1902. DEC.19.1905.FEB.14.1911'', ''COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO.'', ''HARTFORD.CT.U.S.A.'', right side of slide is marked ''MODEL OF 1911 U.S.NAVY'', left side of frame is marked ''UNITED STATES PROPERTY'', ''WGP'' in circle inspectors mark by magazine release, this mark is for Major Walter G. Penfield who was the US Army Inspector of Ordnance from January 2nd 1911 to September 30th 1914. Right side of frame is with S/N, barrel is marked with 7791193 under caliber, likely replaced at a arsenal from the original barrel being worn out. Bore is very good, bright & mirror like with lightly thinned rifling. Original sights with the original rounded rear sight. Has lanyard loop on bottom of grip. Comes with one unmarked non period correct magazine. The U.S. navy marked 1911's are some of the most highly sought after & collectable 1911's out there, & this one would make a nice addition to US Military collection. FFL Or C&R Req. - Value: 5000 to 10000
