FANTASTIC Winchester, Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine, Early First Variation, .44 Henry Cal., MFG: 1866, SN: 14412, Lever Action Carbine, This is a FIRST YEAR carbine. It's generally accepted that serialization for the Model 1866 started at 12,000, with earlier SN's allocated to the Henry rifle & some late Henry rifles mixed in. If that is correct, this is at the latest, the 2,412th 1866 produced. Like all early first variations, the SN is stamped on the inner left side of the lower tang, displays the flat sides, ''Henry Drop'' contoured receiver, the two upper tang screws, early screw layout on receiver, flat loading gate, & early short length forend. It also carries the early 20'' round ''HENRY'' stamped barrel, Full mag. The original wood stocks are excellent & solid, retaining the majority of the original finish. The stock has a tight 2'' hairline crack emanating from the upper tang & running along the left side of the comb, & a small missing chip at the corner of the lower left tang. The stock carry minor handling marks, scrapes & small contusions. Barrel, mag, lever & hammer have toned to a thin brown patina, with a couple of spots of rust pitting. The brass receiver has a nicely aged patina. The early variation flat loading gate displays excellent factory blue. Bore is very good, with spotty areas of roughness amongst strong riffling. The barrel carries the original flip-up rear sight, with marking at 100, 300 & 500 YDS & standard pinch blade barrel band front sight. Stock carries a smooth trapdoor crescent brass buttplate. The lower tang is stamped with the matching serial number & assembly number ''987''. The inside toe of the buttplate is also stamped with the matching SN, as is the upper inside channel of the stock. A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. Tight smooth action & all appears mechanically sound. This is a very rare, all original, high condition & very collectible First Year 1866 SRC. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 20000 to 30000
