RARE Winchester, Model 1894 SRC, SPRUCE RIFLE, 30 W.C.F. (30-30), MFG: 1916, SN: 839453, Lever Action Carbine, 20'' Round tapered barrel, Full mag. This rifle carries the stamping ''J.C. '17'' on the belly of the receiver under the serial number. The J.C. stands for U.S. Captain James Van D. Crisp, who was assigned as disbursing Officer, representing the finance Dept. of the Equipment Division of the Signal Corps at Vancouver Barracks on October 28, 1917. This rife falls into the 835,000 to 853,000 serial number range according to Madis publications of observed Model 1894 carbines purchased by the U.S. Government & issued to enforcement personnel securing the Pacific Northwest forests during W.W.I.. The timber located in the region was considered vital to the war effort. Collectors refer to these carbines as ''Spruce'' guns. Some of these carbines often carried the ''US'' & ordnance bomb stamping on the top of the receiver, (this one does not), others simply the ''J.C.'' stamping on the underside (like this rifle). This rifle has been fully & professionally restored. The original straight grip gum wood stocks are excellent, as very lightly sanded or cleaned in areas & reoiled, with few light surface dings & scuffs present. There is a bit of tiny edge chipping in the area of the toe & along the upper tang. The wood presents as overall excellent, with correct finish & tone. The restored Winchester tone metal blue finish is 95% overall. Some light thinning of the proof stamps & light speckled pitting or abrasions under the restored blue, but otherwise the finish was expertly done. Bore is excellent. Barrel fitted with a folding leaf rear & double box blade front sights. Original saddle ring & carbine buttplate. Tight smooth action. An extremely nice, historical & rare W.W.I. collectible. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1500 to 2500
