Winchester Model 1895, Russian Contract, CAL: 7.62x54R, MFG: 1916, SN: 270301, Lever Action Rifle, 28'' barrel. Between 1915 & 1917 Winchester manufactured approximately 300,000 Model 1895 chambered for the Russian 7.62x54R cartridge & equipped with stripper clip guide ears. The frame at the breech is marked with the WP proof & ''7.62/M.M.'', right side of receiver is stamped with Russian proof/acceptance mark, while the left side is marked with the two line address & patent information, ''MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED NOV. 5. 95. AUG. 17. 97. JAN. 25. 98. AUG. 23. 98. AUG 6. 1907.''. The upper tang has the model & trademark information, ang marked, ''Model 1892 Winchester Trade Mark REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF. & FGN.''. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Russia supported the Spanish Republican Government in their battle against General Francos Nationalist Army. In return for large quantities of gold coins & bullion from the Spanish treasury, Russia shipped immense amounts of armaments to Spain, among which were almost half a million small arms. One of the shipping documents lists 9,000 Winchester Model 1895 Muskets. After Francos Nationalist forces prevailed, a ''National Ordnance Recovery Unit'' was commissioned to survey, sort, clean, or refurbish all captured or surrendered armament. The acceptance mark of this inspection is the ''MP 8'' flaming bomb stamped on the buttstock of each rifle. This particular rifle carries the ''MP 8'' flaming bomb stamp on the right side of stock & is one of these captured rifles sent by Russia to the Spanish Civil War. The rifle features the nearly full length military style forearm, with grasping grooves & military type handguard, & straight wrist stock. The walnut stocks are very good & solid, displaying numerous scrapes, nicks & contusions to the original finish. The original metal blue finish rates 70% overall, with areas of loss toning to a gray/brown patina. The SN & ''B'' are stamped across the lower tang behind the trigger. Bore is very good. Barrel holds a pinned Sheard blade/bead front sight & folding ladder rear sight graduated 15-32 on the ladder & 6-14 on the stepped base. The front band has a bayonet lug & sling loop, while a second loop is mounted to the rear strap. The magazine has a sling loop lug with no swivel, while the buttstock has the sling provision, with original sling loop. Buttstock carries the original smooth metal sliding trapdoor buttplate. A very nice piece of history involving both the Russians & Spaniards, & two wars. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1500 to 3000
