Description

EXTREMELY RARE Remington, Model 16 HALF NICKLE Gallery gun, Marked .22 REMINGTON AUTO Cal., MFG: 1916-28, SN:9205, Semi-Auto Take-down Rifle, 22'' Tapered round barrel. Remington's first production semi-auto .22 rifle. Just 17,720 were manufactured during the 13 yrs of production. According to the consignor, this rare half nickeled model 16 was won by his grandfather by outshooting the owner of the Coney Island NY shooting gallery, some time in the late 1910's or early 20's. His grandfather had served as a sniper during WWI & was known to be quite a marksman. He challenged the gallery owner to a bet/shooting contest & came home with this rifle as his victory trophy. The rifle was greatly passed by his grandfather who used regularly throughout his life until passed onto his son & then to him upon his father's death. Although not a typical model or round for a gallery rifle, it makes sense that this rare half nickeled rifle was in a NY shooting gallery due to its proximity to Remington's Ilion NY production plant. Remington worked hard to get their rifles into these early shooting galleries to get the public used to shooting a Remington over their competitors' rifles. They often placed in these galleries nickeled or rifles with other attractive features to catch the public's eye. Sometimes these special rifles were displayed as a premium prize offering, the type that hung on the wall & for the most part, odds of winning them far exceeded the likelihood & skill of most patrons. While the story of winning it at the gallery is likely creditable, unfortunately there is no record or proof of prominence to substantiate. The original factory wood is very good & solid, but with numerous minor scratches, scrapes & contusions to the worn thin original finish. Some darkening of the wood in areas due to oils & use. The schnabel tip of the forend shows evidence of stress crack repair. The original nickeled finish is retained at 70% on the receiver, 25% on the buttplate, with areas of flaking & wear toning to a brown patina. The metal blue finish on the barrel has fully toned to a chocolate brown patina. Bore is very good, clean, but with spots of scarring amongst solid rifling. The barrel carries the original elevation adjusting rear sight & small blade front sight. Original metal buttplate. Ammo loads through the buttplate into the loading tube in the stock. The .22 Remington Auto round fires a 45 grain bullet approximately 950 feet per second, with 90 ft. lbs of muzzle energy. Due to the larger diameter of the case, the cartridge is not interchangeable with the .22 Short, Long or Long Rifle. The reason for the unique cartridge was to prevent use of black powder .22 S, L, & LR cartridges from being fired in this gun, which was previously the standard at the time. Black powder doesn't work well in semi-auto guns, another reason the semi-autos arrived on the scene around the time of the adoption of smokeless powder. An interesting & rare semi-auto rifle & an early ancestor to Remington's semi auto .22 offerings. B&W picture of shooting gallery does not come with the auction & is used only for descriptive image purposes. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
