F.Bannerman, Model 1896 Spencer Repeating Shotgun, CAL; 12GA, MFG: 1897-98, SN: 17173, Pump Action Shotgun, 30'' barrel. The Spencer-Roper Pump Action Shotgun was the first commercially successful pump shotgun, while not the first design to use a slide action, it was the first to be mass produced & successfully sold. Co-designed by Christopher Spencer, perhaps best known for his repeating rifle, & Sylvester Roper. The pump action was not Ropers first shotgun design, in 1866, he patented a revolving shotgun & in 1889 he developed another pump action design. In April 1882, Spencer & Roper were granted a patent on their design & subsequently established the Spencer Arms Company in Amherst, Massachusetts. They introduced the Spencer Model 1882, based on their pump action designs. Chambered in 10 & 12 ga, with the latter being the most popular, the 1882 has a tubular magazine below the barrel which holds five black powder shells. The Spencer-Roper has a complex action, by cycling the pump the guns pivoted breech block drops below the receiver allowing the next shell to enter the action while almost simultaneously the spent shell is ejected out the top of the gun. What appears to be another trigger facing backwards inside the trigger guard is actually the hammer spur. Ergonomically the early shotguns had very small pump handles & deeply swept stocks this changed in this later model 1896, with larger pump handles being introduced. By 1885, Spencer was in serious debt & sold the patent rights to Francis Bannerman. Bannerman starting putting his name on the side & called them the model 1896. According to resources, he made this model from late 1895- 1898 going to appx SN 18,000. The original round knob wood stock & grooved forend are very good & solid. There are a couple popped grains at the heel, along with contusions, scrapes & dings, with added protective oils contributing to darkening of the finish. The browned finish on the laminated steel barrel is very good, with a clear laminated pattern. The case-hardened receiver has shadows & remnants of faded case-colors. Bore is very good & bright, with visible striations from use. Barrel has a worn front bead. Checkered widow's peak metal buttplate. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
